How PlainDoctor Search Works

The search box on this page queries all 7,056,332 provider records in the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) registry, as of the June 2026 data dissemination. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), every individual or organization that bills health services in the United States must hold a National Provider Identifier, and each of those records is searchable here by name, NPI number, specialty, or city. Matching tolerates partial input and common misspellings, so a last name or a city fragment is enough to start. If you get no results, broaden the query or try a shorter prefix. Every figure is drawn from the federal National Provider Identifier Registry (CMS NPPES) - more than 7 million providers, maintained since May 2007, with 2023 Medicare Part D data, and, according to CMS, can be searched, compared, and traced in our methodology.

What Happens Behind the Search Box

Every search runs against our read-only mirror of the official NPPES file, which CMS publishes in a monthly data dissemination, our methodology documents the current freshness window. We never modify the underlying records; we only normalize formatting (title case, trimmed whitespace, standardized state codes) so results stay consistent across records with different upstream spellings. Each result links to the provider's full profile, where the federal record is shown alongside plain-language explainers, Medicare Part D prescribing data, and MIPS quality scores where CMS publishes them.

Responsible Use of Search Results

NPPES records are self-reported by providers, so a practice address or specialty label can lag a real-world change, and Medicare-based statistics describe only the Medicare population. Before making any healthcare decision, verify a provider's credentials and current standing directly through the official NPI Registry and your state medical board. Search Privacy

Your search queries are processed server-side and are not attached to any account. We log aggregate query patterns (term frequencies, not individual queries tied to a person) for the sole purpose of improving the search index and flagging records where visitors expect more detail. We never sell, share, or resell search logs. If you would like your query logs disregarded entirely, enable private browsing or a tracker-blocker, we respect these settings.
