Compare Medical Specialties
Select two specialties to compare provider counts, geographic distribution, and per-capita density across U.S. states, computed directly from CMS NPPES enrollment data, without proprietary scoring or editorial weighting. Every figure is drawn from the federal National Provider Identifier Registry (CMS NPPES) - more than 7 million providers, maintained since May 2007, with 2023 Medicare Part D data, and, according to CMS, can be searched, compared, and traced in our methodology.
Which provider comparisons are most popular?
Methodology
Our comparison tool pulls provider counts from the CMS National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) using each provider's primary NUCC taxonomy code and NPI record. Per-capita figures normalize raw counts against 2023 U.S. Census population estimates.
Provider Counts
Total registered providers for each specialty, broken down by state.
Per-Capita Density
Providers per 100,000 population using 2023 Census estimates. Helps compare access across states of different sizes.
Note: Provider counts reflect NPPES registrations, not active practitioners. Some providers may be retired or practicing in a different state. Comparisons show relative distribution, not absolute access.
