How to read a taxonomy code
NUCC codes are 10 characters and follow three levels: the provider grouping (for example Allopathic and Osteopathic Physicians), the classification (Family Medicine) and, where it applies, the area of specialization (Sports Medicine). Codes ending in "00000X" carry no area of specialization.
A provider can list several codes on an NPI but marks one as primary; PlainDoctor counts each provider once, under the primary code.

What is a provider taxonomy code?
A 10-character code from the National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC) that classifies a health care provider by type, classification and area of specialization. Providers choose one or more codes when they apply for an NPI, and one is marked primary.
How do I find a provider’s taxonomy code?
Look the provider up by name or NPI in the NPI lookup; the provider page shows the primary taxonomy code and specialty reported to NPPES.
Does a taxonomy code prove board certification?
No. Providers self-select taxonomy codes at enrollment. Board certification is verified separately with the certifying board.
